Types of Parenting - Being a Better Role Model For

10 月 11th, 2010 by showmans

Being a parent is one of the most challenging occupations that anyone can ever take on. It is important that you are able to understand and practice the skills needed to be the best parent you can be for your child. You are your child’s best resource and role model. There are actually several types of parenting styles that are used by parents with their children.

The first among the types of parenting I will introduce today is known as authoritarian parenting. In this parenting style, parents usually have high expectations on their children complying, and conforming to the rules that they have set for them at home, at school, and in the community. The problem with this type of parenting is that the rules and directions given by the parents change with the situation or whenever the parents feel like changing them. This can create an atmosphere of uncertainty for the children. They don’t know what to expect. Most of the children who grew up with parents that used this type of parenting style have lived in fear. The children are usually withdrawn socially and have less self-confidence than those children raised by parents who used other types of parenting styles. They also usually leave home at a younger age, use drugs and get involved with a partner of which their parents disapprove. They often become totally estranged from their parents when they become adults.

The second of the types of parenting for discussion here is permissive parenting. This parenting style of is generally characterized by a goal of a harmonious and loving relationship between the parent and the child. However, there are usually low expectations of behavior because the parent is afraid to use discipline. A permissive parent often has the desire for his/her child to like or be pleased with the parent at the end of the day. As a result, the parent does anything that the child wants him/her to do. Children who have been raised by overly permissive parents usually suffer from immaturity, a lack of focus and emotional self-regulation problems. Children of such parents frequently cannot control impulses and are unable to accept responsibility for their own actions. When they get in trouble, they tend to blame other people. They usually live close to where they grew up and stay dependent even into early adulthood.

Neglectful parenting would be the third among the types of parenting styles for thought. It is basically a notch more extreme than permissive parenting, yet contains some of the same features. A neglectful parent might be able to provide shelter, food and the other basic needs of his/her child, but is generally emotionally uninvolved in the life of the child. Neglectful parents usually do not ask their children about what happened in school and in the other things that they engage in. Most of the time, children of neglectful parents grow up with a feeling of resentment against their parents and become estranged from them in adulthood.

With this information as food for thought, balance and genuineness are key elements to be considered in good parenting.

Consider the following points:

? Allow children to talk about these your rules and expectations
? Create rules are fair, clear, and based on the developmental stage of the child
? Create limits and boundaries that help to deep your child safe
? Explain your rules, limits, boundaries, and your reasons for them (repeatedly, if necessary)
? Verbalize the rules often
? Teach decision-making
? Honor your child’s efforts at self-sufficiency
? Teach and explain natural consequences as a part of ’cause and effect’
? Determine your parenting goal
? Be understanding
? Listen

To your Parenting Success!

Baby Sleep Tips - When You Are Going To Sleep When

10 月 2nd, 2010 by showmans

Your Unique Baby

A new parent goes rapidly through her baby sleep problems. They affect of course the life of both as the quality of life of the new parents will depend heavily on that.

The first doubt the new parent is going to have is how to understand if his baby is going to sleep enough or too much. We have to say that things are going to be different in each baby, including yours (her behavior will be different than your previous babies).

Small Means Sleepless

A newborn experiences shorter sleep and dream cycles than adult people. A newborn will sleep for two thirds of their daytime, half during the day and half during the night.

These periods of intensive sleep are not continuous: especially at the beginning, these sleep times are going to be really short. Your baby won’t sleep for the whole night at least for the first few months, and of course the same will happen to you.

Why Your Newborn is Sleepless

There is a simple reason behind this: your little baby has to exploit all energy to grow and of course will call for your action at any sign of uneasiness.

A clear example of this is feeding: as your baby is so small, she becomes hungry quickly. This can be especially true if your baby is going to be nurtured by breastfeeding; in fact mother’s milk is easily digested so your baby will need to be fed often.

The net result is that your baby won’t sleep continuously and will ask for your help when she’s going to need it; so you won’t be sleeping too.

Improving With Time?

Accordingly to what I’ve just said, as time passes your baby should be easier to handle, as she gets older. What is going to happen?

1) Your baby is going to sleep less; however even at 2 years of age, she’s going to sleep to 14 hours.

2) The amount of daytime sleep is going to diminish at each and every month.

Hope?

When your baby reaches 2 years, she should be sleeping through the night; this night sleeping is however integrated with a couple of hours nap during the day.

Napping is another area which is unique to your baby. There are babies preferring a unique nap, others need two shorter naps.

Whatever the case, be sure to avoid your baby sleeps late in the afternoon, as this will make harder her nightly sleep.

The Trap

So you have to be patient, and maybe you’ll need waiting a lot before being able to have a good night again.

The problem is that patience and persistence are not enough: there is a serious risk that in the meanwhile you are training your baby to not sleep.

How is this happening? What can you do about this? Is your baby already making impossible for you to have a sane night? Discover it in my free baby sleep special report you can get for free at my baby sleep tips [http://baby-sleep-tips.thesolution2.com] website.

Sleeping and Waking For Baby

9 月 22nd, 2010 by showmans

Young babies sleep a lot of the time, but even when they’re tiny they don’t necessarily sleep when it’s most convenient for their parents. The easiest way to deal with a baby in these early days and weeks is to be flexible. Try to arrange your lives so that you can make use of the baby’s sleep time, and when she’s awake, try to make yourselves free to feed and play with her. Be aware that she’s already laying down patterns of sleep and wakefulness that will serve as a guide to when she’ll sleep and when she’ll wake later on. You can affect things, if you want to, by being aware of her sleep patterns and by sometimes gently shifting the balance so that she gets the idea of when to have longer sleeps, when it’s Just a catnap, and when it’s time to be properly awake.

Never too young to play

When i had my first baby, I thought for a long time that she was “too young to play.” I’d put her in her cot, or lie her on the sofa near me, and she’d look around and watch the sunlight on the sitting room wall or the pattern on the curtains - and I wouldn’t realize what a great playtime she was having!

Watching the world

When my third daughter came along a couple of years ago, she arrived into a house already teeming with toys. Within a day or two of birth, her older sisters were already attaching shaker-bracelets to her wrists and ankles, and waving brightly colored cloth books in her direction. I don’t know if all this emphasis on playing from an early age led to a better quality of playtime for her than for my eldest child, but I do know now that babies “play” from the moment they’re born. Not that they realize it, of course: your child won’t have a concept of play for ages yet. But what she does have, even at her age, is curiosity. Along with feeding, it’s the most motivating impetus in her life - one she simply can’t help herself from following.

When you lie your baby down on a blanket on the floor or on some other surface, make sure that you put her somewhere with something to look at. It doesn’t have to be anything very sophisticated - brightly colored curtains will captivate her, as will a light shade, or the branches of a tree swinging gently in the breeze.

Reverse Mortgages and Medicaid

9 月 22nd, 2010 by showmans

Many seniors are pitched the benefits of a “reverse mortgage” as a way to “unlock” the equity in their homes and pay for a better lifestyle. Does this make any sense? In what circumstances? What if one spouse needs to move into a nursing home? Let’s take a look…

With a conventional mortgage, you borrow a lump sum of money from a bank or mortgage company and each month you partially repay the loan by writing them a check. Thus, you must set aside cash flow every month to make sure you can make that payment. If you fall behind, you may find your house being foreclosed on by the bank.

With a “reverse mortgage,” however, you receive a check each month from the bank or mortgage company, and you never have to pay them back as long as you live in the house. If the loan is made to a married couple, then no repayment need be made until neither spouse is living in the home.

At that time, the loan is repaid, plus interest. If the family members cannot pay the loan off, the house will be sold. Note, however, that if the amount of the loan exceeds the net proceeds from the sale of the house, the bank is simply out of luck—it cannot come after the family members for the shortfall.

Thus, a reverse mortgage may make sense for you if:

  • you find yourself short of cash each month
  • you would like to make lifetime gifts to your children or grandchildren and don’t have the cash to do so
  • you would like to have medical treatment not covered by Medicare or your health plan
  • you’d love to go on an extended vacation
  • your spouse must move into assisted living
  • you like the idea of drawing down some of the equity in your house without having to repay the loan during your lifetime, so long as you are living in your house

The amount you can borrow depends on your age, the value of your house, and the current interest rate. The older you are, the more you can borrow, since your life expectancy is shorter and the bank won’t have to wait as long to get repaid. Also, as interest rates rise, the amount you can borrow decreases.

However, it rarely makes sense for a single person who may soon need nursing home care to obtain a reverse mortgage, because as soon as they move out of the house, the loan will have to be repaid. That will cause the house to be sold, exposing the cash that had been protected by the home exemption. Then you have to figure out what to do with that cash so that the person qualifies for Medicaid!

If one spouse is in the nursing home and the other spouse remains at home, a reverse mortgage could indeed give additional income to the healthy spouse. In this case, the monthly payments are not actually counted as income under the Medicaid rules, which is good, since that could allow some of the nursing home spouse’s income to be shifted over to the healthy spouse.

No decision about obtaining a reverse mortgage should be made without a consultation with a knowledgeable reverse mortgage specialist or financial planner. It’s also a good idea to check with an elder law attorney before you sign on the dotted line, to make sure the plan still makes sense if you and/or your spouse will need nursing home care in the not too distant future.

For more information on reverse mortgages, take a look at the information provided by the Federal Trade Commission (www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/homes/rms.htm) or the AARP (www.aarp.org/money/revmort). Asset Protection From Medicaid

9 月 22nd, 2010 by showmans

The Deficit Reduction Act of 2005 established a June 30, 2006 deadline for the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) to release regulations for states to come in compliance with the new severe new restrictions on the ability of the elderly to transfer assets before qualifying for Medicaid coverage of nursing home care.

The law extends Medicaid’s “lookback” period for all asset transfers to 5 years, it was originally 3 years and changes the start of the penalty period for transferred assets from the date of transfer to the date when the individual transferring the assets enters the nursing home. Qualification to the nursing home is achieved when the individual is out of funds, meaning he/she cannot afford to pay the nursing home.

The new federal law applies to all transfers made on or after the date of enactment, February 8, 2006. Any transfer made before February 8 falls under the old transfer rules. Exact enactment provisions are state by state, but it’s clear that non-compliance by 50 state legislatures puts their federal funding at risk.

You can protect yourself from the Medicaid nursing home care by taking action now while you still have your health.

You can reposition (transfer) your assets from you to an irrevocable trust with a truly independent trustee. The key is the “Independence of your Trustee.” The trustee cannot be anyone related to you by blood or marriage. And, you must be willing to give-up complete control over your assets. This lack of perceived control is the most difficult to achieve. Seniors have a deep sense of independence by their ability to control and manage their assets.

Revocable or irrevocable trust, what’s that mean? Revocable is when the original person with the assets transfers (repositions) the assets to a trust with strings attached. The tax lingo is “grantor-type trust. The “strings” when the original grantor (person with the assets) elects himself as the trustee, and the beneficiary of the trust. The grantor, the trustee, and the beneficiary are the same person. Effectively you have kissed yourself on the hand and blessed yourself as the pope. This simply will not work. Period.

An irrevocable trust is when the grantor (the person with the assets) gives-up complete control to an independent trustee who in turn will use his judgment as trustee to manage the assets for the beneficiaries of the trust. The fiduciary relationship of the trustee is to the protection of the assets at any cost. The trustee must protect and must diligently invest under the prudent man rules; he cannot ever deal for himself. The courts do not look favorably on dereliction of duties while serving as trustee. An irrevocable trust is the only significant asset protection device for avoiding the Medicaid spend-down provisions.

Asset protection from Medicaid requires foresight and a strong conviction to walk away from perceived control. Inaction is devastating. Seniors must use all their funds first, then qualify for the nursing home. It’s clear, that these new rules are designed to impoverish the healthy spouse.
