Palm Springs Film Festival

Glamorous stars, creative directors and Hollywood moguls congregate in luscious Palm Springs sunshine at the 19th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival. They come here to accept their awards, meet their fans and celebrate their notoriety. But there’s also another reason for their presence here. Since the 1930’s and the golden days of the Palms Springs Racquet Club, stars have been attracted to the Desert like fireflies to a porch light on a balmy, summer day.

Why is that?

Forget the films, the panels, the chance to meet the stars- while you’re in the middle of all that, stand outside a little apart from the crowd and look up. You will see and feel the natural opulence, the breathtaking presence of a star-studded a Palm Springs evening. The star-studded jewels in the sky and the jewelry-studded Hollywood stars on the Red Carpet are natural companions in this fabulous venue. More than 200 films from all over the world, dozens of appearances and award ceremonies, an unbeatable congregation of incredible film panels create the intrigue and excitement of this event but they can never completely obscure the natural opulence of their setting.

Although the entire schedule is still draped in mystery, we do know that this year, Jerry Weintraub will receive the prestigious Patrons of the Arts Award presented by emissaries from SAG in honor of his contributions to the film industry. Sometime actor, sometime producer and sometime manager of the Stars, Hollywood has surely felt his touch. We also know that Jason Reitman’s Juno will receive the Chairman’s Vanguard award. But when the full schedule is released, it will be as dazzling and surprising as ever.

January 3-14 is just stone’s throw away in time, but there is still chance to plan for a twelve-day event that you will never forget. This is the 19th year of the famous film festival, started by Mayor Sonny Bono, Cher entrepreneur/singing partner, whose visionary political leadership spanned the rebuilding of Palm Springs downtown, a serious Salton Sea initiative and the creation of an enduring film festival. By this time, there are few directors, actors or cinematographer’s who have not somehow touched the Festival with their talents or their personal appearance. Recently Shirley Maclaine, Kate Winslett and Sydney Pollock have received their honors personally. Last year, Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett accepted an award for their Movie, Babel.

The film festival is a natural place for the stars to visit as they have continued to do since they fell in love with Palm Springs real estate during the era of Charles Farrell and Ralph Bellamy’s discovery of the Racquet Club. Elvis Presley, Groucho Marx, Bob Hope, Liberace, Frank Sinatra were one of the hundreds who have lived or played here. We wonder if, besides the living, the shades of many Hollywood celebrities of Palm Springs rest easier as this festival honors their great legacies. Surely, Sonny Bono will be among them, a happy parent to what is now an enriching global epiphany of talent, film and natural splendor.

How to Select the Best Fat Loss System?

6 月 1st, 2010 by derunning

Image : http://www.flickr.com

In our last article, we presented three possible approaches to find a diet, which is suitable for us. Here we are going to have a closer look at approach number one - the “scientific way” - to see, if there is one, which deserves that title and can help us to provide a tailor-made easy fat loss diet for you and me.

To get a feeling for the enormous task, we have set out to master, let’s have a look at a website called “dietsinreview dot com”, which lists in a very comprehensive manner an impressive and at the same time frightening number of diets, which they categorize as follows (number of diets listed in brackets):

Calorie counting (44)
Lifestyle based (165)
Meal based (116)
Diets supplements (340)
Health related (43)
Children diets (13)

In total 721 diet variations, which are amended by interdisciplinary categories like “Fitness based”, “Meal delivered”, “Food and diet products” and “ebooks”. We leave those out as their content overlaps partially with our bulleted list above and they are not all food/supplement based.

On the same site, we find a software tool with a bold and enticing statement: “Our new diet finder. Find the perfect diet for you”. When making use of this tool, we quickly realize that the selection criteria applied are solely concerning our lifestyle and the tools, we are comfortable with applying, when we are committing to a specific diet for the next weeks or months to come.

But this is only one part of the “perfect diet”, we are on the lookout for. More important I consider the question, if our body will be “transformed” into a healthier and slimmer state by this “perfect diet”. Here we are left on our own - note: 174 of the listed 721 diets are getting a 100% approval rating by dieters!- and without further help from somewhere, your guess is as good as mine, if your answer is “yes” or “no” for any chosen diet. We are indeed forced to follow our intuition and our preferences for certain food or ingredients for a final selection.

In order to find a solution, as a former scientist I would try to find the parameters, which influence/determine the wanted outcome and then set up an empiric equation

Output (fat & weight loss) = f (input) = f (var1, var 2,… var n)

where var 1=actual weight, var 2= fat mass or %, var 3= health problem no 1… to var n=…

are all relevant body parameters to be changed/influenced by the diet and it’s recommended/prescribed daily quantities.

If this looks confusing to you, no wonder, as we are dealing here with the complexity of the human body with millions interactions taking place every split second and where the influence of diet ingredients are not known on a molecular level. Therefore, even a layperson understands that our system can never be described by a finite (limited) number of parameters, from which the perfect diet can be formulated. The variety is simply to large from individual to individual and is time dependent.

So where does that finally (not so surprising!) insight leaves us in terms of effective diets? Our list displays 43 diets, which are addressing specific health issues like diabetes, arthritis, breast cancer etc. Those diets contain elements, which are known to influence positively these diseases and therefore certainly can be considered in those cases. On the other hand, if any specific disease is absent, we are left with hundreds of diets to chose from, which all are promising easy fat loss in no time. We only can shortlist those to some extend by our individual lifestyle-preferences criteria.

This automatically brings us to approach two and three of our earlier post - the diet success stories and recommendations, either heard from our family, friends and acquaintances network or from trustworthy reviews. Fair enough, trust in other’s experiences is good but to be in control is better and control here means understanding the diet/fat matter in more depth.

Therefore I will summarize in my next article the available scientific knowledge regarding acquiring and losing fat in our bodies, so that you get a pretty solid basis for making the best possible decision about the route to go - which easy fat loss program to chose. Obviously physical exercising will have to be part of such summary.

Probationary Americans: Contemporary Immigration Policies and the Shaping of Asian American Communities :

Probationary Americans examines contemporary immigration rules and how they affect the make-up of immigrant communities. The authors’ key argument is that immigration policies place race and class as important criteria for gaining entry to the United States, and in doing so, alter the makeup of America’s immigrant communities.

Developing and Strengthening Your Self Control

5 月 29th, 2010 by derunning

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Many people have a hard time mastering, emotions, and instead letting their negative feelings take over them. The art of self-control is one of the hardest to master, but really worth it once it is perfected.

First, it is important to define exactly what self-control is. It is an alternative term for self-discipline, and it involves the ability of a person to control his reactions and his impulses. Some people perceive self-control as an imposing trait, which restricts your expressive side, but self-control is actually an essential factor in personal success. How can self-control help individuals?

Self-control keeps negative traits such as self-destruction and addiction at bay. It also helps a person deal with obsessive-compulsive behavior. It also helps a person become the master of his own life, and having the skill of self-control restores and maintains balance. The best thing in maintaining your self-control is that you are prevented from doing over-emotional responses that he can regret later on when he has become calm and collected. Just imagine yourself developing that sense of independence, which prevents you from being dependent on other people and prevents you from feeling helpless when the chips are down.

A person with self-control develops a certain degree of emotional and mental detachment that aids greatly in giving him a peace of mind. Self-control helps a person achieve a healthy level of assertiveness, willpower and self-esteem. Through self-control, you become a better person, a better human being, as a whole.

As one goes through the process of learning how to have self-control, he will encounter many obstacles. These are unbridled emotional reactions, tendency to act without thinking first, the perception that having self-control makes one boring or an ordinary person, the tendency to lose faith in one’s ability and character and lastly, is having inadequate personal motivation to change or improve his state in life.

On the other hand, it is also important for you to learning how to develop self-control while focusing on the greater benefits. To do this, you have to ask yourself “What are the areas in my life that I need to practice self-control.” Many people have problems with eating right, shopping without overspending, not working to hard or working too hard, excessive drinking, smoking and gambling. Accordingly, think hard and enumerate that factors that makes you lose control over those areas.

In addition, think of a situation that visualizes you being a master of your emotions. Imagine the scenario where you are calm, collected and in perfect control of yourself. Imagine how good you look when you are in control. Hence, whenever you feel like losing control and giving in to your impulses, say to yourself, “I can control myself, I am a grown person and I know how to handle myself.” Or you can say, “I am the master of my life. No one manipulates my thoughts and emotions but myself.”

Most importantly, try your hardest to practice your willpower. You will have to resist temptations most of the time and you have to be prepared for it. Think of the benefit of holding on to your horses rather than letting them lose and create havoc on your efforts to have self-control.

Remember, self-control is all about not letting your fears and addictions from taking over your life. It is about you taking control over the negative feelings present in your life. Having self-control means you will enjoy better relationships with people, do better in your work and other endeavors, and you will learn the things that need your attention and emotions from those that should be ignored and left alone. Developing and strengthening your self-control will make you a better person that you are today.

Control Eating Carbs - How to Control Carbohydrate Intake

5 月 27th, 2010 by derunning

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Control eating carbs, and you’re on the way to a healthier, leaner, more muscular appearance. Sure, carbohydrates are necessary for your organism’s survival. When our ancestors discovered agriculture, they relied on carb-rich food to be able to labor long days in the field. The early farmer was grain eater, and seems to have been constantly cooking bread. These days we lead considerably more sedentary lives than that old farmer. Yet, our love of carbohydrates has only grown–and so has our ability to process and refine carb-based foods. Unfortunately, if we don’t manage to turn all those carbohydrates we eat into energy quickly, those carbohydrates turn into fat.

Carbohydrates

Carbohydrate-rich food is made out of complex carbon and hydrogen molecules. The cells in your body are designed to break these molecules down easily, transforming them into energy to help you talk and walk. They’re also designed to be stored easily by the human body. In the past, when food was harder to come by than it is today, this served a useful evolutionary purpose. Nowadays, when we do considerably more talking than walking, our bodies tend to store more carbohydrates than we can ever hope to use up. The result? All those carbon and hydrogen molecules turn into blubbery lipids that end up lying in your arteries and just beneath the surface of your skin. In other words: the carbohydrates turn into fat.

Refined Carbohydrates Are Worse

Compounding the problem is the fact that most of the cooking people seem to like consists of refined carbohydrates. From pasta to puff pastries, these carb rich foods are prepared in such a way as to make the carbohydrates easier for your body to process than ever before. The consequences of being a big pasta eater is that your body will convert carbohydrates to energy, and unspent energy to fat faster than ever before. Unless you’re a track and field athlete, you can’t expect to eat big bowls of pasta every day and not gain weight.

We Love Carbs

Yet, food containing lots of refined carbohydrates just tastes so good! No doubt because of our hard-scrabble, survivalist past as a species, we seem to be conditioned to especially enjoy carbohydrate-rich cooking. Partially because these once-rare foods are now so easy to acquire, large numbers of Americans must now struggle with obesity. Weight loss has become a national obsession. The average shopper is now a guilty eater. What can help us stop eating so many carbs?

Do Diets Work?

Restrictive diets do help control your carbohydrate intake–as long as you stick to the diet. Unfortunately, we don’t have any ingrained biological incentive not to eat those carbohydrates that our bodies love so much. Most people who wish to undertake a slimming down of their bodies via a carb-restricting diet don’t end up sticking to the diet. They end up gaining back the weight they’d lost.

A More Permanent Solution

Hypnosis is a superior way to keep yourself from overindulging in all those carbohydrate-filled rolls, pizzas, and buttery baked potatoes. Instead of imposing artificial rules via a diet, hypnosis will teach your unconscious to moderate your intake of those foods naturally. After a period of regular self-hypnosis sessions, you’ll be able to control eating carbs.

Instructions For Salton Yogurt Maker

5 月 24th, 2010 by derunning

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Making yogurt with the Salton Yogurt Maker is fun, easy and worry-free. A few things you’ll need are milk, powdered milk for thickening, a thermometer and a yogurt starter. Be sure your yogurt maker is clean before starting. It will provide a stable temperature for incubating the yogurt. In this article you will find the best instructions for Salton Yogurt Maker.

1. Add ½ cup of dry milk powder to 1 qt of whole or skim milk.

The milk should be heated on the stove to 185-190°F, stirring frequently.

2. While you’re waiting for the milk to heat, plug in your yogurt maker so it can be warming up.

3. Let the milk cool to 110-115°F. I usually place the pot in a large bowl of ice water, stirring the milk until it’s cooled to the right temperature.

4. Pour about 1/3 of the milk into a separate clean container and add ½ cup of plain yogurt with active cultures or 1 pack of yogurt starter. Stir until mixed evenly.

5. Pour this starter mix into the remaining milk and stir.

6. Finally, pour the milk into your pre-heated yogurt maker.

7. You should allow the yogurt to incubate 6-12 hours. The longer it is heated, the more tart the taste.

8. When the batch is done, put the container in the frigerator and allow it to cool for several hours or overnight. The yogurt will thicken as it cools.

Now you have a wonderfully delicious batch of plain yogurt. If you like it flavored, add some maple syrup, honey, fruit or jam.

Homemade yogurt is a healthy alternative to store-bought brands. You have control over the ingredients and there’s no risk of eating unhealthy additives and sugars. The Salton Yogurt Maker is inexpensive and easy to use. You don’t have to part with large sums of your hard-earned money for a more expensive unit. Making homemade yogurt is exciting and I hope you find these instructions for Salton Yogurt Maker useful.

Cuisinart Ice Cream Maker

5 月 22nd, 2010 by derunning

Image : http://www.flickr.com

I finally broke down and bought a Cuisinart Ice Cream Maker and I’ve got to tell you, I’m glad I did. I have a family of 10 and being able to make two quarts of homemade sherbet, sorbet, and frozen drinks is a real treat.

As I said, I have a family of 10, so we needed a pretty hefty Cuisinart ice cream maker to keep up. We went with the ICE-30BC which I have to say, is pretty well made. It’s rugged, looks killer, and works like a charm.

The only flaw is, you have to freeze the bowl for a good 24 hours in order to get your creation to the proper consistency.

The Cuisinart Ice Cream Maker company has another model that I’ve got my eye on. It’s a commercial Cuisinart ice cream maker and it has its own, built-in freezing chamber. That means, no bowl freezing. Just turn it on and 30 minute later, ice cream!

The down side to that is, it’s $300. BUT, I also found a similar maker (another brand) for $700 so I guess it’s not that bad.

Let me tell you a little bit about the history of this frozen confection, I think you’ll find interesting.

The Emperor of Rome (Nero) was credited with having sent his servants into the mountains to collect snow. This was then mixed with nectar, fruit pulp and honey. Sure, it wasn’t as convenient as a Cuisinart ice cream maker, but it must have been a tasty treat!

No one knows for sure the origin of this fantastic frozen delight, but in the 13th century, Marco Polo came back from Asia with recipes for ‘water ice’. Apparently the Asians had been using them for thousands of years.

Italo Machiony had a cute little pushcart where he sold his homemade frozen dessert on Wall Street. He invented a waffle cone to keep people from running of with his glass cups and patented his idea in 1903.

No matter what you call it, or who made it, whether it contains fruit, nuts, chocolate, or peanut butter (my favorite) you really do need to be able to make your own. Not only is it a bit less expensive, but there are NO preservatives and you can put exactly what you want in it.

If you’re looking for a Cuisinart ice cream maker, you definitely want to check out my website for more information.
