Née en 1971, à Harbin, chef lieu de la province du Heilongjiang, dans le nord-est du pays, Cui Xiuwen est une artiste et photographe qui travaille principalement l’image et la vidéo. Vivant à Pékin, elle est connue pour son court métrage « Ladies Room » en 2005 et sa collection de photos « Angel Series 2006″. Les experts explique qu’elle « mène une réflexion sur l’individu dans la Chine moderne ».
Après des études en 1990, au département des Beaux Arts de l’Université Normale de Changchun, dans le Jilin, elle continue au département de Peinture de l’Académie centrale des Beaux-arts de Pékin en 1996. Cui Xiuwen se fait une réputation avec son court métrage « Ladies Room » (« Toilettes pour femmes »), en 2005. Elle film dans un hôtel de Pékin, des prostituées qui se retrouvent au cours de la nuit dans cet espace public/privé, pour se « regarder dans le miroir, se remaquiller et remettre en place leur soutien-gorge », indique Pierre-Jean Tribot, Rédacteur en chef de Resmusica.com, sur son blog.
Une reconnaissance internationale
Be.Art explique qu’elle centre son travail sur « la condition de la femme en Chine avec un propos fort, servi par une composition toujours précise et rare ». En 2004, elle est l’un des premiers artistes chinois à exposer son travail au Tate Modern Art Gallery de Londres. La même année, les collectionneurs venus d’Europe et d’ailleurs s’intéressent à ses œuvres, elle va d’ailleurs vendre l’une d’elle, lors des enchères à Sotheby’s. Il s’agit de la photo numérique Cui, « One Day en 2004″ qui met en scène une jeune écolière chinoise, légèrement battue, avec le maquillage lourd et dans des dizaines de positions.
En 2006, elle expose lors du Festival international de photographie de Lianzhou en 2006 et puis pendant le Paris Photo 2007. Elle fait partie des 35 artistes chinois présentés durant la China Gold au musée Maillol en 2008.
Un sujet féminin
« Je crée des thèmes sur le sexe, et non pas des thèmes de la sexualité. Je me concentre sur les êtres humains, seule la forme humaine dans le monde. Si vous voulez savoir ce que c’est que d’être humain, vous devez avoir un aperçu de la relation entre l’homme et la femme », explique l’artiste sur ArtZineChina.
Le sujet majeur de Cui Xiuwen est une jeune écolière pâle avec des cheveux noir. Celle-ci a différentes poses et expressions, qui mettent la femme chinoise face à la société moderne et passée de l’Empire du milieu. Emprise entre modernité et tradition, les photos de Cui Xiuwen sautent à l’œil du spectateur, par des couleurs vives et nettes, et une écolière étrangement blanche et habillé de la même manière à chaque fois.
Mais ce sont également les positions de la jeune fille qui étonne, entre glamour et horreur, elle oscille entre des expressions de désarroi et de joie, de rêverie et de concentration. Le paradoxe. Il en est de même pour le sujet qui peut seul ou décuplé.
Cui Xiuwen est l’une des artistes contemporaines chinoises les plus appréciées par sa finesse de ses images et parce qu’elle nous interpèle, nous pousse à nous arrêter pour réfléchir et tenter de résoudre l’énigme ou la beauté de l’œuvre.
