As the number of international adoptions grows, parents should be aware of
potential health issues affecting children adopted from China and some Eastern
European countries.

According to a recent article by two U.S. family physicians, most adoptees
arrive in their new homes with medical records from their country of origin. But
such documents are frequently inaccurate or incomplete, so parents should
consult their family doctor or a paediatrician after the child arrives. But it’s
advisable to delay this first visit for between two to four weeks (except in
case of acute medical problems), so the adoptive parents can bond with and

Although there’s a high rate of certain infections among international
adoptees, the adopting family is considered to be at low risk during the first
